After the United States and the European Union (EU), Canada is going to impose additional tariffs on the import of electric cars from China. The country also plans to impose 25 percent tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum imports.
Canada echoes its Western allies in complaining that China subsidizes the electric car industry. As a result car manufacturers are getting unfair advantage in the market.
China says Canada's decision to impose tariffs is trade protectionism. This violates the rules of the World Trade Organization.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, “We are transforming the country's automotive industry to become a global market leader in building the cars of tomorrow. But countries like China have chosen to give themselves an unfair advantage in the global market in this sector.”
According to the BBC, Canada's tariffs on Chinese-made electric cars will come into effect on October 1, and tariffs on steel and aluminum will come into effect on October 15.
A spokesman for China's Ministry of Commerce said Canada's move has seriously undermined the global economic system and economic and trade policy. They say China has called on Canada to immediately correct its wrongdoings.
