Itooka is set to take the title after the world's 'oldest' person, Maria Branias Morera, of Spain, died on Monday at the age of 117. A research group said this on Wednesday.

Tomiko Itooka was a mountaineer. He was born on 23 May 1908. According to the US-based Gerontology Research Group, he lives in the western city of Asia in Japan.

Itooka is a mother of three children. In his 70s, Itooka often climbed mountains in Japan. He climbed the 3,067-meter high Mount Ontake in Japan twice.

According to the Gerontology Research Group, Itooka stunned guides by climbing the mountain in just sneakers without hiking boots. And at the age of 100, he climbed a long flight of stone steps without a stick to the shrine of Ashiya.
