Thailand's former prime minister and tycoon Thaksin Shinawatra's daughter has been elected by parliament as the new prime minister.

At just 37 years old, Petang Tarn is Thailand's youngest prime minister and the country's second female prime minister after her brother-in-law Yingluck Shinawatra.
Thailand's parliament elected Petang Tarn as the new prime minister just two days after the Constitutional Court ousted the previous Prime Minister, Sretha Thavisin. Sretha was accused of 'violating the code of ethics' by appointing a jailed lawyer as a minister.
According to the BBC, on Thursday Pheu Thai Party announced the name of Petang Tarn as its candidate for the post of Prime Minister. Former Prime Ministers Sretha and Petangtarn are both Pheu Thai Party leaders. This party came second in the 2023 election. But they formed a coalition government.
Petangtarn is the fourth member of the Shinawatra family to become prime minister in Thailand in the past two decades. The remaining three were ousted by military coups or constitutional court rulings.
Petangtarn attended elite schools in Thailand and universities in the UK. He worked for several years in the Rende Hotel Group owned by the Shinawatra family. Her husband is appointed as the Group's Deputy Chief Investment Officer.
Petangtarn joined the Pheu Thai Party in 2021 and was appointed party leader in October 2023.
